What is Hatha yoga? Hatha yoga classes will incorporate meditation, breathwork (pranayama), and physical postures (asana). Postures may be practiced while seated, standing, or laying down. During this class, you may be asked to get up and down from the floor.
What do I need for the practice? Each practice will vary, but I recommend that you dress in comfortable clothes and have some water and maybe a hand towel available. Yoga mats are optional and will depend on the type of floor you’re practicing among other factors. I recommend starting with a mat and if it’s not working, you don’t have to use it. In terms of props, it may be helpful to have two yoga blocks (or a chair), a blanket or large towel, and a strap (belt or dog leash). What if I’m running late? If you’re a few minutes late, that’s okay! Feel free to join us. However, if it’s more than 20 minutes after the start of class, it’s probably best to sit this one out.
What if I need to leave early? No worries! You’re free to leave whenever you need.
Is practicing yoga safe? Like any physical activity, yoga presents the risk of injury. Since you’re practicing at home, you’ll need to take full responsibility for your safety. Here are some things to consider:
- If you are unsure if practicing is safe for you due to a medical condition, I encourage you to talk to your doctor or healthcare provider to see if yoga is right for you.
- If you are currently injured, I ask that you refrain from practicing so that you do not aggravate the existing injury.
- It’s extremely important that you listen to your body and treat it kindly during yoga practices. If it feels like you’re doing too much – rest. Yoga is a practice, not a performance, and no one will judge you for practicing the appropriate self-care!
- Find a space that is clear of clutter and allows you to move easily without the risk of tripping or falling on something that may injure you.
- If possible keep pets, small children, and other beings that may interrupt your practice out of the room.
- If you’re returning to physical activity after a prolonged “break” please check with your health care provider to make sure that it is safe for you to practice yoga.
